What customers say?

“ The tea room was fantastic the first few years it was open. Now it has become much more expensive and the menu even as of last year was much better. I still go and still enjoy it but I miss the times when it was not touristy and reasonably priced. I'd still recommend it but mostly now because of the grounds. I must admit I admire the volunteers who help there and the Tuesday morning plant sale. Update 2022 - post covid, the menu is now limited, closes end of August and only open 3 days a week so always check their web site. Food is still excellent. Now called Rudi's ”

“ Had a lovely pot of tea and iced tea sat out on the deck. They're now giving out little tubs of milk, like a hotel room, but milk in small jugs would be better. Still it was lovely and very relaxing ”

- Alistair Mason -

“ A lovely repast after touring the magnificent grounds around Government House. Friendly staff made sure our dog had water. The hot roast beef sandwich was delicious, as was the strawberry tart. ”

“ Absolutely charming! Visiting Rudi’s Tea Room, located inside the Cary Mews Tea House at 1401 Rockland Ave, Victoria, BC, was a delightful experience from start to finish. Nestled beside the stunning Government House Gardens, this hidden gem is the perfect midday escape for locals and visitors alike. Open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, from mid-May to the end of August, Rudi’s is a seasonal treasure that captures the heart of summer in Victoria. While they don’t offer “High Tea” and don’t take reservations, the cozy atmosphere and walk-in-only policy give it a relaxed, welcoming feel, like visiting an old friend. The staff and volunteers are truly the soul of this place. Warm, attentive, and full of smiles, they make every guest feel at home. Whether you're popping in for lunch, sweets, or a refreshing beverage, you can expect to be treated with genuine care and hospitality. The menu features a lovely assortment of fresh, homemade-style fare. The lunch options are thoughtfully prepared, making them perfect for a light bite before or after a stroll. And oh, the desserts — divine! The take-out option is a nice touch, especially if you want to enjoy a picnic in the gardens. Speaking of which, walking through the Government House Gardens after a meal at Rudi’s is a must. The grounds are beautifully maintained, peaceful, and full of blooming charm — a perfect complement to the tranquil experience at the Tea Room. “ We started by looking at the set up of the historical info of the government house and some local cultural stuff then, Enjoyed a lovey light lunch with my friend... the servers were attentive and such a relaxing atmosphere, followed by a beautiful walk in the gardens.. ”

“ I've lived here in Victoria for over 2 decades, and just found out about this tea room! And let me tell you ... this hidden gem did not disappoint. We had family visiting for a few days and toured around the grounds of Government House, which are immaculately maintained and absolutely beautiful. We stopped in for a quick bite to eat, not really expecting anything special, and were blown away by the variety on the menu. The Ham and Cheese quiche is definitely something to write home about ... also comes with the choice of the daily soup or salad ... and even prepared with a gluten-free crust. And I can't forget the Buddha Bowl, which at some establishments can be a little lacklustre, but here it is chock full of all the fixings! Staff were friendly and service was prompt without being overbearing. We had a fantastic experience overall between touring the gardens and the tea room, and can only offer our full compliments. We will be back again soon! ”

“ You seat yourself, order at the till, and then they bring your order out to you. This cute tea cafe is located on the Government House property in the Cary Castle Mews. The prices are very affordable. I ordered the Season Berry Eaton Mess, which is gluten free. It composed of meringue, lemon curd, Chantilly cream. It was light, delicious, and refreshing. I would love to come back and try their sandwiches and other pastries. Please note that this tea house doesn't serve high tea. ”

- Amanda Lee -

“ I was a little surprised when we went for tea at Cary news as I was expecting more of a high tea kind of menu. However the food that was prepared for us was beyond expectations. I was very impressed by the home brewed ice tea. We also had their desert of the day and the only issue was it wasn't really for sharing. This is because it was so good I didn't want to share. The volunteers we're super friendly and extremely helpful. I will definitely be going back and bringing friends. ”
